St. James Cemetery

HISTORY

In 1844, two years after the founding of St. James Episcopal Church, the wardens and vestry purchased 20 acres running west from the railroad to what is now Winn Street. At the northwest corner of this property in 1849 the church created a "grave yard" containing about 1 1/4 acres.

The first burial was performed in 1850 when The Rev. Lucien Wright, a priest from Maryland was interred. Leading families of St. James Church and Marietta purchased lots, and many well-known citizens are buried there. Some familiar names such as Schillings, Northcutt,
Glover, Brumby and Freyer are included. Also, Alfred Waud ( d 1891) a well known Civil War Artist is interred in the cemetery.
