The Extension was started in 1987 as the Marietta-Cobb Winter Shelter by St James’ and the other churches around the Marietta Square. It has evolved over the years, so that it now provides not only winter shelter for homeless men, but also an additional comprehensive residential treatment facility for those who desire to free themselves from the grip of drug and alcohol addiction
There is no other program for homeless addicted women in the North Metro area.
The facilities available rarely address their addiction, providing little incentive for them to seek help. Even considering the certain undercounting, 38% of all homeless people in the 2005 point-in-time-count in Cobb County were women!
On May 1st, the new Barbara J Crafton Extension Center for Women opened at 130 Holiday Street. On Monday June 15th we celebrated with an Open House and a ribbon cutting ceremony, led by Congressman Phil Gingrey, who with his wife Billie were Honorary Chairs of our Capital Campaign.
We currently are housing 20 previously homeless women, who now are in a stringent recovery program which will enable them to return to healthy productive lives in our community. Ten of these women have made such progress in their recovery that they are working and continuing their recovery program. Good news, indeed!.
We are in need of volunteers: groups, families, or individuals, who are willing to prepare, serve and join in the evening meal for these women. You can sign up for one meal, or become part of a regularly scheduled serving on the second Sunday of every month by calling either Jean Ann Wright at 770-402-5747 or Judy Hoyt at 770-420-2401.
Many thanks to all who have supported this effort with your prayers, your treasure and your good wishes! We are especially grateful to Sue Hannan who generously donated funds for a gathering room in memory of her late husband B.Fred Hannan, and to the entire St James’ community who sponsored a resident’s room, The St James’ Room.
Blessings Judy Hoyt

“I remember crying three years ago when they took the pictures for the church directory. Dwayne wasn’t there; I didn’t know where he was. Katie was just a baby. It was hard. Now, thanks to The Extension, Dwayne is home and our family portrait is complete. Thank you everyone.”
