Knitting Into the Mystery is the title of a book by Susan S. Jorgensen and Susan S. Izzard. It is a guide to their shawl making ministry for cancer patients. Our Friday morning group at St. James has expanded on their idea to include making and crocheting for other worthy causes. We make and deliver blankets, booties, hats and sweaters to "Tiny Stitches," an Atlanta-based charity which supplies complete layettes to numerous North Georgia hospitals for distribution to immigrant families who have little or nothing for their newborn babies.
St. James' Wonderful Days families receive warm knit hats for all their children each winter season. Recently, we sent a large box of scarves and hats to the Seamen's Institute in New York for distribution to workers on tankers and oil rigs.
Following the guidelines in Knitting Into the Mystery, we have made and distributed many comfort shawls and lap robes for St. James' parishioners who are recovering from serious illness or from bereavement. These are made with love and prayer for each recipient, and a note is sent with each item. All our yarns are donated, for which we are thankful.
We extend a warm welcome to new knitters or crocheters who care to join us, or send us items you make at home.
