Education for Ministry is a four year course presented by the University of the South. During the four years, the reading material covers the Old Testament, the New Testament, Church History and Theology. The groups are led by a mentor, with the weekly meetings structured to include discussion of the reading material, worship and a time for theological reflection.
At St. James', we presently have two EFM groups: Monday night (Jean Ann Wright, Mentor); and Tuesday morning (Sue Hannan & Lillian Kirkpatrick, Mentors). Each of the groups invites new members to join them for the coming year. Tuition for the course is paid to the University of the South, and is $340 a year. The mentors have enrollment forms for new members. Scholarships are available to help with the cost of the program, so please ask one of the mentors if one is needed. Reflections on Education For Ministry by Jean Ann Wright
When you think of your life, when you need to solve a problem, when you need to make decisions big and small, how do you do it? What thought process do you use to work through things so that any decision you make will be the best for you and for those you love.
For over twenty years I have used a method I learned in Education For Ministry to evaluate the insignificant and important decisions in my life. This method is to look at the situation using a criteria for evaluation. The criteria I learned in EFM is to ask these questions... where is the Creation, the Sin, the Judgment, the Repentance, and finally the Redemption in this situation? When I look at what is happening in light of these issues, then I can see what is really happening, what is important and what is not, and what I should do.
I learned this method of making decisions in the EFM class I took 20 years ago. It is a method that always helps me make a reasoned decision, based on my faith in God and theological reflection rather than on my feelings or a momentary impulse.
