Our Mission: Spiritual Growth

Our aim is to nurture and develop Christian faith, love, and service through biblical literacy and Anglican tradition in an environment of trust.

Each class is led by faithful volunteers and staff dedicated to the spiritual nurture of children.  All are invited to participate in the worshipping and learning community of St. James' Episcopal Church, Marietta

Preschool
2 year olds through Kindergarten

Classes for 2 year olds through Kindergarten children are specially designed and written to compliment and coordinate with the units being studied by our elementary rotation church school classes. "Godly Play", theological storytelling experiences based on the Montessori method, as well as many other multi-sensory resources, will be used to present biblical concepts and stories in an age-appropriate manner.

A Workshop Rotation Church School

Quoting from The Potter’s Workshops web site helps define this model:

(Workshop Rotation - http://www.potters-workshops.com )

“The workshop rotation model is a creative and effective way to approach Sunday School. The model is based on children rotating to different workshops each Sunday.  Each workshop utilizes a particular learning style for its approach to the lesson.  A Bible story or concept is taught through the workshops over the course of several weeks.  Children come to know the Bible and God through a variety of ways,.....drama, art, games etc.  Workshops are flexible.

What is the basis for this model?

Educational studies show that we learn in a variety of ways.  Our own personal experiences verify this.  In recent years, educational theorist Howard Gardner has identified seven intelligences that we possess.  He contends that we possess each of the intelligences but in different degrees.  We do our best learning through our dominant intelligence.  But we can strengthen our less dominant intelligences by practicing them.  Knowing this, how do we teach God’s children?  Traditional education generally focuses on a verbal approach with passive listening.  Some children learn this way. Many do not.  The workshop rotation method of Sunday School changes the method of teaching from ‘sit and listen’ to ‘learn by doing.’ Since each workshop focuses on a particular learning style, children come to know and understand God’s word in ways that they can understand.”

Some people define the method simply as one story, many workshops.  We will offer art, drama, computer publishing, and music/movement or cooking, and Bible skill workshops.

Other workshops including science, geography, nature, and media production will be used when integration with the units is appropriate.     Each grade level has a “Shepherd” who will shepherd the children and participate in the assigned workshops. Shepherds will be a consistent link while the children change workshops from week to week.
