September 7 - First Acolyte Meeting in the Chapel

All Saints Sunday - New Acolytes are introduced to the congregation

Advent 1 - New Acolytes serve for the fist time.

The Acolyte Program at St. James' offers our youth an opportunity to become an active participant and an important part of our liturgical worship on Sundays and other special days of celebration throughout the year.  The program at St. James' is open to all young persons, third grade through high school, who are baptized Christians.  For more information, call our Associate Rector, The Rev. Raymond Gotko.

The Book of Common Prayer states, "at all celebrations of the liturgy, it is fitting that the principal celebrant, whether bishop or priest, be assisted by other priests, and by deacons and lay persons". (BCP, 322) We are very proud of our Acolyte program at St. James'. This is an important ministry that provides the opportunity for our children and youth to serve at the altar.

Facts about being an Acolyte at St. James':

  • Must be 8 to 18 years old to serve
  • Acolyte and Chorister Boot Camp in August
  • Seasonal training meetings are provided
  • Acolyte Recognition dinner during month of May
  • Yearly trip to the National Acolyte Festival in Washington, D.C.

The Acolyte email list may be accessed at here.

Foyer Groups PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bill Johnson

Foyer Groups will begin anew in September.  You are encouraged to join one of these supper groups this year.  Even if you have been a member of St. James for some time, participating in a Foyer group is a fabulous way to get to know fellow parishioners.  If you would like to join, please contact the church office or Bill and Eleanor Johnson, phone number 770-436-4233, to place your name on the list.  If you do not wish to participate this year, please contact the church office and ask that your name be removed from the Foyers list.  Groups will be mailed out in mid-to-late September, so it is crucial that we have accurate information before then.  Thank you!

What's a Foyer Group?  These supper clubs are a fabulous, informal means to become better acquainted with your fellow parishioners, and are appropriate for singles or couples of all ages.  Each group contains 10-12 people, and each group sets it own schedule for meeting (usually once every 4-6 weeks).  Members of the group take turns hosting the meal at their homes.  Hosts prepare an entrée, while other members round out the meal by bringing the appetizer, salad, side dishes and dessert.  Some groups may wish to meet at a local restaurant.

St. James' Wedding Guild PDF Print E-mail
Written by Pam Breeden

Overview

Open to any adult parish member, The St. James’ Episcopal Church Wedding Guild is a group of volunteers who organize and direct wedding rehearsals and ceremonies. Much like a wedding consultant, the Guild’s main purpose is to help the wedding participants accomplish their goals in achieving a satisfying and meaningful ceremony. One need not be an etiquette expert to be a member of the Wedding Guild – training is provided. The Guild members are volunteers who answer questions, organize and direct the wedding rehearsal, and provide back-of-the-church coordination on the day of the ceremony.

Written by Tom Gibbs
Our T’ai Chi and Qigong come from the remarkable tradition known as The New Forest Way.
These activities offer healthy ways to handle stress, and they improve balance and muscle
flexibility. They also engage the imagination and stimulate the intellect. We “play” for 50 minutes
at each meeting. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

Saturdays at  10:00 am, in the Hall Room. We begin fall classes on September 12.

Recommended reading:  A Morning Cup of Qigong and A Morning Cup of T'ai Chi, both by The Rev. Venerable John A. Bright-Fey. Other books by The Rev. Ven. Bright-Fey include titles in the Whole Heart series: The Whole Heart of Zen, The Whole Heart of Tao, The Whole Heart of Yoga, and The Whole Heart of I Ching. All are available at amazon.com.

Instructor Tom Gibbs
is a St. James’ parishioner. Since 1999, he has been a student and practitioner of Buddhist, Taoist, and Tibetan contemplative practices, as preserved and transmitted by Sifu I Sijo John Bright-Fey Tao Jen, Tao-Shih, the first Western successor in the 500 year old ancestral tradition of the Dharma Mind Seal Lineage Holders of the Blue Dragon Order of Esoteric Zen Buddhism. The Reverend Venerable Bright-Fey is also the recipient of the vast oral tradition of the T’ien-Shih, or “Celestial Masters” sect of Taoism, also known as the Wu-Tou-mi Tao, or “Five Pecks of Rice School.” The curriculum known as The New Forest Way has been designed by Bright-Fey to make the benefits of the classical eastern contemplative arts more readily accessible to westerners.
