Players- 31st Season
2009-2010
Season Information Flyer PDF
Polk Street Players opens its
31st season in September 2009 with “Jake’s Women”, written by
Neil Simon. Jake is a successful fifty-something New York writer
plagued with both writer’s block and troubles with women—lots of
women! He juggles and struggles
with his relationships with his estranged second wife, adult daughter,
neurotic sister, scatterbrained mistress, overwhelmed psychiatrist, and
unforgettably haunting first wife.
This semi-autobiographical Simon comedy takes a surreal look into
the mind of a complex man with hilarious and serious results. Directed by Barbara Rudy.
_____
In November 2009, we present
“Christmas Belles”, written by the trio of Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope,
and Jamie Wooten. It is
Christmas-time in Fayro, Texas, and the Futrell sisters (Frankie, Twink,
and Honey Raye) are in charge of the Christmas program at the Tabernacle
of the Lord. The hilarity spins
out of control in this Southern farce, ably assisted by the squabbling
Futrell siblings, family secrets, a surly Santa, a bitter ex-director, a
vengeful sheep, and a reluctant Elvis impersonator as Honey Raye
struggles gamely to keep the Christmas program on track. Directed by Pete Borden.
_____
The end of January and early
February of 2010 will bring us “The Murder Room” by Jack Sharkey—the same
author who penned PSP’s 2008 audience-favorite play “I Take This
Man”. There’s murder afoot as a
proper British wife weighs all her options in ridding herself of a pesky
husband. Throw into the mix a dimwit
daughter, an American son-in-law to be, a stuffed shirt lover, a nosy
constable, and a frisky maid, and you have a recipe for laughs and
thrills. Just what IS hidden
downstairs in the “Murder Room”? Directed
by Brad Rudy.
_____
In May, 2010, we will present
our final play of the 2009-2010 season—“Mystery at Greenfingers”, written
by J. B. Priestley. In the closed
Greenfingers Palace Hotel, part of the staff is enduring a violent
snowstorm. Included is the chef,
the new social hostess, two maids, the assistant manager, and the sleek
bartender. Crowther, a rather
stupid house detective, is sent to investigate something secret. Miss Tracey arrives in her car with a
mysterious passenger. When the
mysterious passenger disappears after a gunshot is heard, will the
bumbling detective ask the right questions, or will it fall to someone
else to solve the case? Directed
by Tina Powell.
