MISSION
STATEMENT
"In love for our
Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer, the Pilgrimage at St. James' Episcopal Church seeks the guidance of
the Holy Spirit in providing a place for spiritual growth open to
all who desire to know God."
SPIRITUAL
DIRECTION
The Pilgrimage is a ministry of St. James'
Episcopal Church and was created to serve the spiritual
needs of the people of northwest Atlanta. Programs include
speakers, retreats, quiet days, classes, and special events
and are provided to support the search for a deeper relationship
with God. All who have interest are invited to participate.
Spiritual direction is also offered. Sometimes referred
to as spiritual guidance or spiritual friendship, spiritual
direction is an ongoing relationship in which one person
(the directee), desirous of being attentive to her or his
spiritual life, meets with another person (the director)
on a regular basis (approximately once a month), specifically
for the purpose of becoming more attuned to God's Presence
and to respond more fully to that Presence in all of life.
The primary focus of the session is the directee's relationship
with God as it is reflected and challenged by all aspects
of that person's life. In this time together of silence,
prayer and talk, spiritual direction becomes an act of
worship. It is sacred time. The purpose is different from
counseling in that it is not a time to problem solve. The
relationship is fostered in an atmosphere of trust and
caring and is held in strictest confidence.
Group and individual spiritual direction are offered by
trained spiritual directors. No fee is expected. If you
feel drawn to do so, contributions may be made to The Pilgrimage
at St. James'.
Quiet days are times of quiet and reflection. The leader
presents reflections on which to meditate that are appropriate
to the season. To facilitate an atmosphere for contemplation,
music and icons are available as well as art supplies.
Journaling is encouraged.
A new room at the church is being set aside for the Pilgrimage.
It will be a place to be quiet, a place for prayer, as
well as for individual and group spiritual direction. The
peaceful ambiance of the new room will benefit small groups
also.
St. James’ now has a canvas Labyrinth, based on the Chartres
Cathedral pattern. The Labyrinth will be available for use
as announced here, and in "The Word", our parish newsletter.
The Labyrinth is dedicated to the memory of The Rev. B. Fred Hannan. We welcome your participation in our programs.
The Pilgrimage at St. James’ Episcopal Church
The Pilgrimage at St. James’ takes its name from the missionary
work of James who was chosen by Jesus to be one of His
apostles early in His ministry. According to tradition,
after Jesus’ resurrection James went to the Iberian Peninsula
where it is believed he spent a number of years preaching
before returning to Jerusalem. He was martyred by Herod
of Agrippa in 44 A.D. Pilgrimage describes the individual
journey with God. The intention of The Pilgrimage at St.
James is to continue to nurture an awareness of God’s presence
and sustaining love for those who desire to experience
more meaning, purpose and life-direction in response to
the Divine Mystery.
We thank you for your continued support of our programs
and ask your prayers as we continue this ministry. Please
let us know if you have particular interests for which
we might provide programs.
Labyrinth
The ministry of Spiritual Direction at St. James is guided by our Rector Karen Evans and a group called "The Pilgrimage". Associate Rector Ray Gotko is also involved. The Pilgrimage members offer Quiet Days, at least during the Seasons of Advent and Lent. We begin with Morning Prayer, led by one of our members. Then we lead participants to a variety of spiritual growth vehicles. These include Benedictine Centering Prayer, Music, Art and Exercise, as well as Individual Quiet Times where a person can BE quiet and perhaps write in a Journal.
At these times we provide the opportunity to walk the Hannan Labyrinth. The Labyrinth is a spiritual tool, which has ancient roots. Our Labyrinth is patterned after the 12th century Labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral in France. We attempt to offer this opportunity every few months. Please check The Word for appropriate times and dates.
A few of St. James parishioners are accredited Spiritual Directors. Please call the church office for the names of those folk if you would like to learn more about personal Spiritual Direction.
